ABOUT US
Sonus Fishery is a leading innovator in sustainable fishing. Our mission is to protect the marine environment while optimizing fishing practices through advanced technologies. In collaboration with DTU Aqua and with support from the EU, we are working to promote more environmentally friendly fishing methods. Our latest technological solution, BTS-3, is designed to revolutionise fishing by minimising environmental impact and maximising sustainability.
BTS-3 is a groundbreaking technology that uses low-frequency sound to enhance fishing outcomes while protecting marine environments. In traditional bottom trawling, heavy equipment such as trawls and trawl doors are dragged across the seabed, causing significant damage to ecosystems and the ocean floor.
BTS-3 utilises carefully selected low-frequency sound waves, based on scientific research on fish reactions to acoustic stimuli. These sounds trigger fish to flee upwards from the seabed, making them easier to catch without harming the seabed itself. BTS-3 reduces the need for heavy equipment, minimises bycatch, and protects sensitive marine habitats.
The EU has implemented a ban on bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) to safeguard important and vulnerable marine ecosystems. These areas are rich in biodiversity and play a vital role in the conservation of marine life. The ban on bottom trawling aims to prevent seabed destruction and ensure that future generations can benefit from a healthy marine environment.
Bottom trawling is a fishing method where heavy equipment such as trawls and trawl doors are dragged along the seabed to catch bottom-dwelling fish. Although effective, this method has severe consequences for the seabed and surrounding ecosystems. The seabed can take years to recover, and bycatch negatively impacts non-target species. BTS-3 was developed as a solution to these challenges.
BTS-3 addresses several key challenges associated with traditional bottom trawling. The technology reduces seabed damage by eliminating the need to drag heavy equipment across it. It also decreases bycatch by using low-frequency sound to guide fish away from the seabed, creating a more selective and sustainable fishing process.
Sonus Fishery has received support from theEuropean Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund(EMFAF). This support has been crucial in developing and implementing the BTS-3 technology. EMFAF promotes sustainability in the fishing industry and protects marine resources, and their funding allows Sonus Fishery to continue innovating with solutions like BTS-3.
Sonus Fishery collaborates with DTU Aqua, a leading research institute in fisheries and marine environments, to ensure that our technology is grounded in the latest science and research. This partnership allows us to continually refine and improve BTS-3, ensuring the best solutions for both fisheries and the environment.
